Spell Checker Poem by Mark Eckman and Jerrold H. Zar

At one time or another, youve probably run across some version of whats commonly known as The Spell Checker Poem. Originally composed in 1991, its first official appearance was in The Journal of Irreproducible Results in 1994. Since then, it has made its way around the Internet under various titles, including Spell Checker Blues, Owed to a Spelling Checker, and Spellbound. Almost always the poem is attributed to Anonymous or, more playfully, Sauce unknown. Lets set the record straight. The title of the poem as we know it today is Candidate for a Pullet Surprise, and the expanded version was composed in 1992 by Dr. Jerrold H. Zar, professor emeritus of biology and retired dean of the graduate school at Northern Illinois University. According to Dr. Zar, the title was suggested by Pamela Brown, the opening lines were drafted by Mark Eckman, and 123 of the poems 225 words are faulty, although all are correctly spelled. Update From Mr. Mark Eckman Early in March 2007, Mark Eckman was kind enough to provide us with additional information about his role in creating the spell-checker poem. Back in 1991, when Mr. Eckman was working for ATT, e-mail was becoming a rage, he writes, but it was also changing rapidly: . . . Somehow the software discussion became two camps of thought. On one side was the marketing staff saying we should have a spelling checker in the software since most users of e-mail were not skilled typists. On the polar opposite was the group that believed you should not be writing e-mails if you cant spell. After about two weeks of this give and take, I sent off the first two verses. My intent was to see if people would return to thinking rather than arguing, and after the ditty appeared in ATT Today [a daily e-mail of news updates], the discussion came to a grinding halt. Shortly after this I received an e-mail from someone I had not contacted before with pages and pages of additional verses. . . . In 1994 or 1995 I was doing a presentation on search engines, entered my name and Dr. Zars article came up. I was stunned. Lost in all that has passed was the intent and the original two verses. I like to think the original was more subtle.I have a spelling checkerIt came with my PCIt highlights for my reviewMistakes I cannot sea.I ran this poem thru itIm sure your pleased to noIts letter perfect in its weighMy checker told me sew. I never dreamed what happened after I deleted the file. At least I did not start text messaging shorthand. Our thanks to Mr. Eckman for helping us set the record straight. The Spell-Checker Poem More than an exercise in homophonous humor, Candidate for a Pullet Surprise endures as a cautionary tale for all those who place too much trust in spell checkers. Islam and Jihad Essay - 1185 Words

The Arabic word Jihad literally means holy struggle. It is not holy war. War is war. No war can be holy. The blood of humans is holy and sacred. The Quran says unjust killing of one man means the killing of the whole mankind. What is just killing and what is unjust killing. When some body kills a man without any reason or justification it is unjust killing. When the judge gives the capital punishment to this murderer and issues the order of his death, it is a just killing. Similarly, when a war is thrust upon you and you become the victim of persecution and aggression, you are permitted to defend yourselves and kill the invaders or perpetrators. There are some Muslims who believe in Jihad in the name of aversion and conversion.†¦show more content†¦Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad gave us law and code of life. All preached brotherhood, justice, freedom, equality and peace. The prophets were the greatest champions of human rights. They boldly revolted aga inst the tyrants, oppressors and aggressors. Jihad by sword is only permissible when you are attacked. It is unfortunate that Islam is being branded as the religion of extremists, fascists, fundamentalists and terrorists. A few days ago some non-Muslim emailed me. He wrote; Islam is the religion of terrorism and Muhammad was a terrorist. Why he wrote this? How he came to such a conclusion? First; he has neither studied Islam nor the life of the Prophet of Islam. Second he has read or seen the terrorist activities of some Muslim hard liners and extremists. Partly he is correct and partly he is incorrect. The Quran about mischief mongers and the enemies of peace candidly in Sura The Cow; when it is said to them; ‘make not mischief on the earth. They say; ‘we are only ones that put things right. Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realize it not (2:11-12). The serious, objective and rational study of the Quran testifies this verity that Islam strongly condemns bloodshed and aggression. It is a religion of peace. The Meccans attacked Muhammad thrice. Motivation Letter Fulbright Essay Example For Students

Motivation Letter Fulbright Essay My name is XYZ. I am 23 years old and have graduated from the Industrial Engineering Department of the AAA Institute of Technology (YYY). Spending four years of eminence academic period at YYY has given me so many experiences in many aspects which have built both of my hard and soft skills. I was actively involved in organisations like the student union (Industrial Engineering Student Union) and in the research laboratory community (Laboratory of Innovation and Organisational Design). During this time, a lot of my colleagues gave me feedback that I have profound qualities in leadership and interpersonal skills, as I have no difficulties getting along with new people and I am also frequently appointed as the person in charge when taking part in the organisation of events. The four years spent at the university also gave me competence and personal interest in the Industrial Engineering field. Thus, it drives me to learn more about the knowledge on a higher level, which is the master degree. When talking about the Industrial Engineering higher studies, there are certain specialisation topics that I am particularly interested in, which is the design management (innovation, design, engineering). I believe that the successful outcome of the study will result in the building of supportive thoughts in the development of better industries’ performance and sustainability. Speaking widely, the better industries even can later influence the better economy in a country. The way I see it, the issue of sustainability is now equally important when compared with current studies, particularly in Indonesia which emphasizes more on Industries’ optimal and efficient production process solely. Therefore, in Indonesia, it can be said that there are not many studies related that are able to be found today. Hopefully when I gain the knowledge I can share it through my best contribution to catalyst Indonesia as an emerging industrial country. When I finish taking the master degree on the mentioned field, I project myself to continue my studies on the doctoral level, so that I will have the opportunity to conduct further research into related topics, in addition I have also informally engaged in becoming an academia in YYY. I will develop the knowledge obtained in the institution under the Industrial Engineering Department and I also would like to arrange collaboration between academia and industries, particularly in Indonesia to improve their performance and sustainability. Being a lecturer would be an ideal position for me to contribute myself to the country as well as having the chance to share my knowledge to the next generations. I am fortunate to know that such topics turn out to be offered by some universities in the USA thus it motivates me to spend years of study there. The USA is also known to have vanguard studies in the field of Industrial Engineering and it has been referenced by many academic experts in Indonesia, including the lecturers at YYY. Moreover, I think no one would hesitate to enter into the US academic system. The other reason why I want to study in The USA is that spending years in the country can bridge a network among international students, which can give me the chance to keep a strong relationship with them, then later co-operate with each other and give contributions to our surroundings. Besides, I am also interested in learning more about American culture and promote the Indonesian culture as well. What motivates me to have all the plans is always having dreamed of being a global citizen who not only gives contributions to my own country but also to the bigger scope. To conclude, I have had enough time to obtain the basic and fundamental acadaemic knowledge and also arrange my life path plans after spending 23 years in Indonesia. Now having the chance to take the master study in The USA is wide open. Having strong motivation, vision and capability, makes me believe that I would be one of the right candidates to be chosen on the Aminef-Fulbright 2010 Program, then it would be the time for me to have the journey and make all of my dreams come true.

Human Resource Planning

Question: Discuss about theHuman Resource Planning. Answer: Introduction Human resource planning defines the necessity and significance of possessing a human resource organization plan. The plan should offer a basic description of what is included in the plan and also discuss the facts and figures that is included in it and it helps the project manager and team to further tackle the project. The Department of Human Resources is accountable for guaranteeing obedience along with documented rules and measures, contracts of labor, and centralized and to have nationwide service laws Providing guidance and the direction to management and employees in all human resources functions supporting the goals and main objectives in order to fulfill the Citys workplace. The staff members Human Resources department is whole heartedly dedicated to deliver the backing and facilities that are, in turn, required to enable employment, enrolment, welfare, workforce, expansion and exercise, management of risk, security, and work relations. This also comprises keeping active work relations with the general public, and other outside factors that are in relation with the organization of the Sunnyside hospital. The Sunnyside Hospital, the focus of the assignment, is situated near the external area of Greater Toronto and provides hospital care in its full potential and caters to the people with heavy persistent loads, mostly on weekends. The Sunnyside hospital consists of a healthy and fully functional administration system, intensive care unit, emergency, long term care unit, maternity ward, medical/ general ward, operating room where surgeries are carried out and pediatrics ward. As an acute care giver, the hospital employs people from different strata of necessities and expertise, one who can develop and deliver health care services. Workforce Analysis In Sunnyside hospital, there is an increase in the number of patients then there is also an increase in the number of the staff members. In this hospital, there are many sections from the top to the lowest and each having their own individual identities and works (Diamandis, 2015). Voluntary Turnover Projection So according to the analysis, it has been seen that if there is an increase of patients to 15% then there should also be the same percent of the increase in the staffing criteria. The number of nurses needs to be increased in Sunnyside hospital at first. The increased turnover can also cause then severe loss if not handle properly (Basu, 2016). Retirement Projection There shall be the need of recruitment not only due to the increase in the number of the patients but also for the replacement of the old retired nurses. Nurses will come and they will also get retired so, this is also a very common problem in Suunyside hospital(Charles Schwab, 2016). LTD Projection This is also another big issue regarding this hospital. According to the history the analysts had declared that this hospital has a lot of long term disability cases. According to this analysis Sunnyside hospital is going to lose the same amount of workers as they have it now. So if they have now 50 registered nurses now then in the upcoming 5 years from 2014-2019 they will lose the same number. Current Vacancies Currently, to meet the urgent increase in the number of patients in Sunnyside hospital there is an excess need for recruitment in every part of the hospital. Moreover, to cope with the situation, the management has decided to open a new wing also. So there are vacancies in every corner of this hospital(Punke, 2014). Recruitment Projections As there are so many vacancies in the Sunny hospital there shall also be the needful recruitments. Now the recruitment criterion is not same for the different recruitment needs. For the nurse, the recruitment criterion for Sunnyside hospital shall be different and for the laundryman, the recruitment criteria shall also be different. Both of their works are different so the qualifications and also the eligibility criterion shall also be different in Sunnyside hospital. (Health Care Insights, 2016). Growth Projections The increase in the growth rate has been a big factor for this hospital. As the growth is increasing they are not being able to meet up with the needful services in Sunnyside hospital because of the decrease in the number of their staff members. So this can also bring down their reputation in the upcoming future(Health Care Insights, 2016). Completion and Discussion of the Final Exam Projection Template From the given excel sheet the values shall change in different situations depending on the different criterion. The values may have to decrease where it might seem to increase. The chart shows so many aspects which are needed to be recruited for the working of this Sunnyside hospital. Recommendation Section If there is an increase in the number of patients then there should also be an equal percent of the increase in the number of staff members. The staff members of this Sunnyside hospital are the people who are actually going to help Sunnyside hospital work in the market. They are the actual people who are the service providers. In Sunnyside hospital, service is the main thing so if there are not enough service providers then there is no use of that hospital. The management should immediately go for new recruitments. In this case, the management of the Sunnyside hospital has to be very careful while selecting people. They have to keep in mind that the people they are selecting are going to be the actual service providers. The service matters the most in all these cases. If there is any flaw in a case of service then that hospital shall lose everything whatever they have gain in the previous years. So the recruitment procedure should be started as soon as possible. Anarchy, emergence of essays

Anarchy, emergence of essays New York Times, on Sunday, November 8, had an article on sentences addressed by a Federal judge to three members of the antigovernment Montana Freemen for conspiracy and fraud; the article stirred my memory and concern about this paper, as well as brought into play many of the dilemmas discussed in the Nature of Politics class. However, I do not wish to analyze this particular article or cult, but the emergence of anarchy. There have been theories and diagnosis of human nature: the Aristotelian, teleo- logical view of the political animal, the Platonic, metaphorical view of the chained caveman, the Hobbian, phobic view of savage life as inevitably short, and many notable others. Regardless of the differences found in these, there is a common denominator found in all. That is, human beings move from the animalistic, passive stage to the civilized stage in order to materialize their potential in full. In this domain, governments serve as expedients or facilitators of an anthropological movement. The mechanism may differ from one type of government to another, but its principal, common function is to lay and protect the foundations for a prosperous humanity. In aiming this, a totalitarian regime, an oligarchy, or even a democracy, resorts to some pattern of hierarchy. It is worth noticing, that no matter what degree of legitimacy one government enjoys, or another lacks, they both eventually assume an hierarchical order which in turn inevitably assures a pragmatic i n e q u a l i t y. History repeatedly proves that beyond theory. Even in Communist Soviet Union where all classes were abolished, as they were accused of being the source of all social misery, even then and there, hierarchy rose with the communist-party-class at its top. In the interstate system as well, although member-states are said to be equally ...

RTI module Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

RTI module - Essay Example Finally, wrap up involves adopting the RTI approach in schools to change the existing processes (The IRIS Center, 2012). This module should explore in detail the assessment actions integral to RTI (The IRIS Center, 2012). It outlines how to use growth monitoring data to decide if a student is meeting the recognized performance norm or if more rigorous intervention is required. When specific criteria are utilized, cut scores should be established to assess learners against a particular level of proficiency such as achieving a mark of 15 or above (The IRIS Center, 2012). Students scores, in a normative comparison, should be compared against those of a greater group such as getting marks over the 25th percentile compared to a nationwide sample of 3rd grade learners (The IRIS Center, 2012). I would stress to Ms. Doran that the core curriculum in the classroom must be field tested and research-based (The IRIS Center, 2012). This section describes which students should receive Tier 3 intercession or special education services. The educator should also use this module to examine parents’ involvement in assisting English Language Learners gain knowledge. This implies, derived from evidence from assembled research, that the core curriculum incorporates all the elements found essential to successfully teach students and has an identified record of
